We Went To The “Beauty And The Beast” Blue Carpet And Asked The Cast About Their Favourite Books

Including far off places, daring sword fights, magic spells, a prince in disguise!

It’s not long now until Disney’s live action version of Beauty and the Beast is released, and we totally can’t wait. So when BuzzFeed got the opportunity to meet with the cast at the film’s launch event in London, we decided to ask them all one very Belle-esque question: What’s their favourite book?

1. Dan Stevens (The Beast) – Matilda by Roald Dahl

Puffin Books

“My favourite book to read to my kids or for me personally? I’m going to say Matilda by Roald Dahl. I think Belle would appreciate that.”

2. Luke Evans (Gaston) – Life of Pi by Yann Martel

Random House

“One of my favourite books was Life of Pi. I love that book. I’ve read it a few times.”

3. Audra McDonald (Garderobe) – Gone With The Wind by Margaret Mitchell

Simon and Schuster

“This is going to sound crazy, but Gone With The Wind. That’s terrible for me to say, but only because it’s the first really big book I read.”

4. Nathan Mack (Chip) – A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket

Scholastic

A Series of Unfortunate Events. The first one!” (That’s very important.)

5. Josh Gad (Le Fou) – The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson

Crown Publishers

“Probably Devil in the White City. I love it because I love history, I love a good thrill, and that book – it just takes you to a place.”

Josh then told us he’s currently reading Great Expectations by Charles Dickens…

6. Director Bill Condon – Great Expectations by Charles Dickens

Doug Peters / EMPICS Entertainment

Puffin Classics

“My favourite book of all time?! I’d have to say Great Expectations. I think there’s something about Pip that has always appealed to me.”

7. Emma Thompson (Mrs Potts) – Middlemarch by George Eliot

Penguin English Library

“That’s a really, really hard question. My normal response would probably be Middlemarch by George Eliot, just for its extraordinary breadth and reach. I’d take it on a desert island.”

8. Composer Alan Menken – A Moveable Feast by Ernest Hemingway

Simon & Schuster

9. Sir Ian McKellen (Cogsworth) – The Encyclopaedia Britannica

Encyclopaedia Britannica

“I don’t have a favourite book. Well, I like the Encyclopaedia Britannica, but that I think is twenty five books. But it’s a very useful set of books. You can put things on it.”
